Astronauts eating food grown in space. NASA astronauts Scott Kelly (born 1964, right) and Kjell Lindgren (born 1973) eating food grown onboard the International Space Station (ISS). This is the first food has been grown, harvested and eaten in space. It is part of NASA's VEG-01 experiment (VEGGIE) that is developing methods for growing fresh vegetables in space, to add more variety and nutrition to the heavily processed thermostabilised diets astronauts receive during space missions. Such technology would be especially important for the multi-year journeys necessary to take people to Mars. Photographed onboard the ISS on 10th August 2015.
