Indian tapir. 1869 illustration of an Indian tapir (Tapirus indiens), now known as the Malayan, or Asian, tapir (Tapirus indicus). Tapirs are large herbivorous mammals with a short prehensile (grasping) snout. The Malayan tapir is the largest of the five species of tapir and the only one native to Asia.
