Earth globe and inner cores. Earth hemisphere global map, centred on the northern Atlantic Ocean, with the Earth's inner and outer cores (orange) made visible. The outer core is a liquid layer of iron and nickel, around 2160 kilometres thick. The inner core is a solid sphere of iron-nickel alloy, with a radius of 1320 kilometres. Surrounding these is the mantle, a layer some 2900 kilometres thick consisting of both sold and semi-molten rock. The outer layer is the crust (around 35 kilometres thick). The Earth's diameter is around 12,742 kilometres.
