Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia as a child. Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova (1901-1918) was the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, the last ruler of Imperial Russia. Anastasia and the rest of the Romanov family were killed by the Bolshevik secret police on 17 July 1918 following their house arrest after the Russian Revolution the previous year. Rumours that some of the family survived led to several women to later claim they were Anastasia, but these claims were proved false. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
