Caption

Eye lens. Light micrograph footage of a section through an eye lens. The front of the lens (left) is marked by a single layer of cuboidal epithelial cells that retain their nuclei (dark purple dots). The epithelial cells making up the rest of the lens have become extremely elongated. They have all lost or will lose their nuclei, making them transparent. They are the lens fibres. The cell membranes of adjacent fibres are fused leaving little extracellular substance between them. The lens is situated behind the pupil. It focuses light onto the retina.
