Volvox algal colonies. Light microscopy footage of colonies (coenobia) of the freshwater green alga Volvox globator. Each colony is a hollow sphere made up from thousands of cells arranged in a single layer. A colony can grow to more than 1 millimetre in diameter. The green spheres within the colonies are daughter colonies, which are produced asexually.
