Experiment to show the starch content of a leaf. A fresh leaf (at left) is boiled in water for 30 seconds then in boiling ethanol for a few minutes (left of centre). This removes most of the colour (right of centre) and the leaf is washed in cold water. Iodine solution is added from a pipette. Those parts of the leaf containing starch turn blue-black (starch iodide, right).
