Vitamin A crystals. Polarised light micrograph of vitamin A, recrystallised from xylol. Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin. Dietary sources include animal fat, butter, egg yolks and the liver oils of fish such as cod and halibut. Carotene, from sources such as green vegetables, is converted into vitamin A in the liver. Deficiency of vitamin A may lead to weight loss, growth problems and diseases of the eye such as night blindness and xerophthalmia. A more fundamental deficiency reaction is the keratinisation of epithelial tissues. Magnification x60 at 35mm size.
