Beta-Carotene. Polarised light micrograph of crystals of beta-Carotene, an important precursor of Vitamin A. Beta-Carotene is found in all plants and in many animal tissues. It is the main yellow colouring in carrots, butter and egg yolk and is also found in plant chloroplasts. When ingested by animals, it is converted to Vitamin A by the intestinal walls and stored in the liver. Magnification x4 at 35mm size.
