Amyloidosis in diabetes. Light micrograph of a section through an islet of langerhans in the pancreas of a diabetic patient with amyloidosis, showing amyloid deposits (pink). Amyloidosis is a group of rare but serious conditions caused by deposits of abnormal protein, called amyloid, in tissues and organs throughout the body. Here, these deposits have resulted in the death of the beta cells, which are responsible for releasing insulin, leading to type 2 diabetes. Magnification: x1,110 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
