Eye cancer. Ultrasound image of a sagittal section through a retinoblastoma (centre-left) on the retina of the eye of a 12-year-old patient. Retinoblastoma is a malignant (cancerous) tumour of the retina, the light sensitive membrane that lines the back of the eye. It is usually found in infants, and often causes blindness in the affected eye. It can spread (metastasise) to the brain along the optic nerve. Treatment is surgical removal of the affected eye, sometimes combined with radiotherapy. Unless it is detected early, the prognosis is poor.
