Vitamin D. Artwork based on a polarised light micrograph of crystals of vitamin D, also known as calciferol. Vitamin D is fat-soluble, and is found in foods such as oily fish, milk, liver and egg yolk. Vitamin D is also produced by the body by the action of sunlight on the skin. It is used by the body in bone and tooth formation, and absence of vitamin D leads to rickets (improper bone formation in children) and osteomalacia (bone softening in adults). Vitamin D also has a role in digestion, being necessary for the absorption of calcium and phosphorus in the gut.
