The arena of the Colosseum in Rome showing raked seating areas and the hypogeum (under stage area). The 83x48m arena was supported above the hypogeum, as depicted by the reconstruction in the background. The emperor's box is visible at centre left behind the cross. Also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Colosseum was built between 72AD and 80AD and is the largest amphitheatre ever constructed. It is one of the main tourist attractions in Rome and in all of Italy.
