Simulated fingerprint mutilation. Recent years have seen an uptick in criminals attempting to conceal their identity by deliberately mutilating their fingerprints. One method, illustrated here, is to cut out a patch of skin, usually from the centre of the fingertip, rotate it, and sew it back on, thus fundamentally changing the shape of the fingerprint without obvious scarring.
