Polarised light micrograph of mature larch (Larix sp.) wood. Trees are normally categorised as either coniferous (cone bearing) or deciduous (shedding their leaves in autumn). Larch falls into both categories and is one of a very few coniferous trees which sheds their leaves. Magnification: x27 at 10cm wide.
