Polarised light micrograph showing three annual growth rings and sections of spirally thickened vessels in mature redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) wood. Groves of redwoods thrive along the Pacific Coast of North America. The oldest trees are at least 2,200 years old and the tallest living specimen is recorded at 115.5 metres high. Magnification: x28 at 10cm wide.
