Illustration of normal insulin and glucose production. Insulin (blue triangles) is produced by islet cells in the pancreas, and acts in unison with glucose (yellow dots) to regulate energy in the body's cells. If the body develops high blood glucose levels due to insulin resistance or relative insulin deficiency diabetes can occur. Also shown in the diagram are glucose transporters (GLUT-4), and the insulin receptors.
