Illustration of the detailed structure of a chromosome. The p arm, centromere, q arm, and DNA molecules are labelled. The p arm is a short arm structure on one side of the chromosome, and the q arm is the long arm structure on the opposite side. The centromere is a constricted point where the two chromatids are held together. DNA molecule, strands of DNA are formed into compact structures inside of the chromosome by proteins called histones.
