Stages of liver damage due to alcoholism. First alcohol compromises the liver, causing large deposits of fat to develop and enlarging the liver (fatty liver disease); if this progresses, scar tissue forms and more liver cell injury occurs (fibrosis); finally the scar tissue makes the liver hard and unable to work properly (chronic hepatitis/cirrhosis).
