Caption

Illustrating the mechanism of action of osteoporosis. Bones are in a constant state of renewal with osteoclasts (yellow) destroying old tissue and osteoblasts (orange) building new tissue. However, when the action of the osteoclasts exceeds that of the osteoblasts then more bone tissue is destroyed than is renewed and bones become weakened. This condition is called osteoporosis.
