Illustration of a coronary bypass. When the coronary artery is obstructed by a plaque of atheroma (the yellow area of the vessel), the blood can not circulate correctly to irrigate the heart. A bypass is undertaken with a transplantation of a vessel (part of an artery or vein) from the aorta to the affected coronary artery, so as to deviate the coronary circulation.
