Litmus changes its colour depending on the pH of the solution. Here, litmus paper strips were placed in test tubes with different solutions to compare their pH. At left, litmus in vinegar turned red indicating an acidic solution. At right, litmus in a baking soda solution turned blue indicating it's alkaline.
