Colour enhanced scanning electron micrograph of Tetrahymena thermophila, a freshwater ciliate approximately 50 micrometers in length and covered with 700-800 cilia. Tetrahymena is a useful model organism for studying a variety of human ciliary diseases known collectively as ciliopathies. This scanning electron micrograph shows a typical Tetrahymena cell magnified 2000 times.
