Transmission electron micrograph of lysosomes in the supranuclear region of an epithelial cell from the epididymis of the bandicoot. This image illustrates some of variation present in the appearance of lysosomes (in red). They can be round, elliptical, or highly irregular in shape. Lysosomes are always limited by a membrane, but their content can be of either homogeneous or heterogeneous density.
