Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) revealed the presence of Lagos bat virus (LBV) virions (green), and an intracytoplasmic inclusion body (blue) in this tissue sample. LBV is a Rhabdoviridae family member, and a member of the genus, Lyssavirus. No human cases have been reported, but this organism does cause rabies-like neurologic symptoms in mammals, including the Lagos Island fruit bat, Eidolon helvum, as well as domesticated cats and dogs.
