Caption

The skin of a Gummy shark ( Mustelus antarcticus ). The gummy shark, is a shark in the family Triakidae. It is a slender, grey shark with white spots along the body and flat, plate-like teeth for crushing its prey. It has a maximum length of between 157 cm and 175 cm. This specimen was collected in Australia. This image is 1.5mm in width and was collected at a magnification of 82x. Sharks have a covering of dermal denticles that protects their skin from damage and parasites in addition to improving their fluid dynamics.
