Colour-enhanced Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) showing asparagus pollen grains. Garden asparagus (Asparagus officinalis) is a spring vegetable. A well-maintained asparagus bed will start bearing one year after planting and will stay productive for 10 to 15 years. The edible part of the asparagus plant is the young stem shoot, which emerges as soil temperatures rise above 10 C (50 F) in spring. The blooms are small and yellow. Image width: 56 micrometers. Magnification: 1785x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
