Hammer toe. Close-up of the foot of a 78-year-old female patient with hammer toes. Hammer toe is a deformity of the middle joint of the second, third, or fourth toe causing it to be permanently bent, resembling a hammer. The condition is thought to be caused primarily by ill-fitting shoes. It can be corrected surgically or through using straps to hold the toe in the correct position.
