Bacterial conjunctivitis. Close-up of the eye of a 50-year-old female patient with conjunctivitis caused by a bacterial infection. Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the eye. It causes redness, irritation, itching and occasionally abnormal sensitivity to light. It can be caused by an allergy or by bacterial or viral infections.
