Episcleritis. Close-up of the bloodshot eye of a 36-year-old female patient with acute recurrent episcleritis. Episcleritis is an inflammatory disease affecting the outermost layer of the sclera (episclera) of the eye. Treatment is often not necessary but lubricant eye drops (artificial tears) may be used to reduce irritation and discomfort.
