Enlarged lymph nodes. Close-up of the swollen neck of an 7-year-old male patient caused by enlarged lymph nodes (lymphadenopathy) as a result of a viral upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). Lymph nodes are part of the lymphatic system and are responsible for filtering pathogens and other foreign particles from the lymph fluid removed from cells around the body. As a result, lymphadenopathy occurs when the body is fighting an infection.
