Caption

Light microscopy of a epiphyseal growth plate in a developing bone. The plate shows columns of chondrocytes that produce cartilage matrix (blue). Chondrocytes then die, the cartilage tissue is calcified and slowly disappears while bone tissue (pink) is deposited by osteoblasts in the metaphysis. Long empty looking spaces will form the cavities for bone marrow. Magnification x100 when printed at 10 cm.
