Caption

Light microscopy of a fetal foot showing cartilage (blue) adopting the shapes of future bones. In fetal and postnatal life the cartilage is slowly replaced with the deposition of new bone, a process called endochondral ossification. In the fully formed adult skeleton most of the cartilage has disappeared except for example at opposing bone surfaces that articulate within joints. Magnification x3.5 when printed at 10 cm.
