Light micrograph of a male (right) and female (left) bird flea (Ceratophyllus gallinae). Fleas are tiny wingless blood-sucking insects with laterally compressed bodies and long legs adapted for jumping. The bites of human fleas are irritating, but, unlike other species of flea, they are not responsible for the transmission of disease. Magnification 6.4x at35mm.
