Ocean surface pH, 1861-2100. Animated dataset on an Earth map showing the recorded and predicted global changes in the acidity (pH) of the oceans from 1861 to 2100. The pH is colour-coded from slightly alkaline (blue, 8.3) to nearly neutral (white, 7.7). The oceans are currently slightly alkaline, with an average pH of around 8.1 (7 is neutral). The acidity is being changed by the increase in carbon dioxide (CO2). More than a quarter of the CO2 released into the atmosphere is absorbed by the oceans. This computer model is based on past records and CO2 emission estimates in the AR5 (2014) assessment of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Ocean acidification has the potential to significantly impact marine ecosystems by the end of the 21st century.
