Caption

Mars solar wind bow shock research. Simulation of the solar wind bow shock at Mars compared with observations by NASA's MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution Mission) spacecraft. The first part of the clip shows a simulation of the solar wind at Mars. This is then overlaid with with data from the MAVEN spacecraft. MAVEN's observations confirm the existence of a bow shock with a density and shape matching the predicted pattern. MAVEN is the first spacecraft devoted to exploring and understanding the Martian upper atmosphere. MAVEN was launched in November 2013, and reached Mars in September 2014.
