Caption

Emission spectrum, animation. The colours here show the electromagnetic radiation emitted by excited atoms and ions of a chemical element or molecule. Such spectra are used to identify chemical elements, both in the laboratory and in distant stars. Different atoms, ions and molecules have characteristics spectral 'fingerprints' that allow them to be identified by the light they emit.
