Caption

Polarised light micrograph of crystals of acetanelide (C8H9NO), also named N-phenylacetamide. Acetanilide was developed in the late 19th century as an analgesic and painkiller. Its use was discontinued due to undesirable side-effects. Prolonged use interferes with the function of haemoglobin. Magnification: x136 at 10cm wide.
