Polarised light micrograph of a longitudinal section of mature wood of the white willow (Salix alba). Salicylic acid extracted from the stems was used in the manufacture of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). Stems are used for basket weaving and the wood is used for cricket bats. Magnification: x271 at 10cm wide.
