Bacterial cell, illustration. This is a generalised bacterium, illustrating features of different bacterial types that would not be combined in a single cell. The upper part is Gram positive: that is, it has a thick outer wall made of peptidoglycan over a single membrane. The lower part is Gram negative, with a thin peptidoglycan layer between two membranes. Flagella (long thin strands mostly at bottom) and cilia (short, closely packed strands at right), threads that allow bacteria to move, are also seen.
