Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in the wild on a mountain near Kyoto, Japan. A subadult female grooms another dominant female of her family line who occupies a high rank she will likely inherit. Mother and baby suckle behind. They have matrilineal societies and females remian in their natal group for life while males disperse. Grooming is seen as vital for maintaining social cohesion.
