Caption

Edmonston & Douglas, Edinburgh for "The Instructive Picture Book, or a Few Lessons from the Natural History of Animals" by Adam White. Origional colour. Some of the strangest images of sloths ever produced. The human like faces goes back to representation from the time of Conrad Gesner in the 1500's. Equally their mode of sitting in the tree shows that no real sloth had been observed by the illustrator, author or even editors of the book.
