A large subadult male southern elephant seal (Mirounga leonina) showing the tendency for the species to accumulate huge fat deposits under the skin without deleterious effects on health. It serves a variety of purposes including a buffer against periodic food shortage, physical protection and bulk in fights, and insulation in extreme cold. This elephant seal was photographed on Seal Island in the Falklands / Malvinas.
