Caption

Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in the wild on a mountain near Kyoto, Japan. A lower rank female grooms another dominant breeding female of her family line who occupies a high rank she will likely inherit. They have matrilineal societies and females remain in their natal group for life while males disperse. Grooming is seen as vital for maintaining social cohesion.
