Goliath Beetle (Goliathus goliatus) and Chafer beetles - Plate 95, original hand colour, Arcana entomologica, or, Illustrations of new, rare, and interesting insects by J.O. Westwood. These lithographs were from Westwood's own paintings and are initialed at base. Note that (also in this collection) on the 1849 Lithograph Portrait showing Westwood he is holding a goliath beetle - quite possibly this one. John Obadiah Westwood (22 Dec 1805 - 2 Jan 1893) was an important British Entomologist, curator and later Professor at Oxford University and was influential in taking on the collection of his friend and patron Frederick William Hope. The Hope-Westood collection formed the basis of the important Oxford museum entomology collection. He was President of the Entomological Society of London from 1852-1853.
