There is evidence that fossil elephant skulls (prehistoric dwarf elephants were found on Cyprus, Crete, Malta and Sicily) were known in ancient Greece and placed in positions of high regard as founding evidence of one eyed giants - the cylcops.That is the theory of Othenio Abel put forward in 1914.
