Outer edge of a Pleuroceras pyrite ammonite from the Jurrassic of Buttenheim Germany preserved in pyrites (fools gold FeS2). The patterns and ridges of the outer shells of ammonites can be used to identify them. Together with the pattern of inner chamber sutures, these structures are often quite distinctinctive between genera and species.
