Charles Darwin (1809-1882), British naturalist. Darwin proposed the theory of evolution with natural selection as mechanism by which evolution took place. His theory was published in 'On the Origin of Species By Means of Natural Selection' (1859). It caused a storm of controversy with Christian orthodoxy, as it contradicted the widely accepted belief that different animal and plant species were created by a divine creator (God). This Woodbury-type portrait is a carte de visite with a superimposed genuine Darwin signature. It was published by John G. Murdoch from a photograph taken around 1874. It is thought to have been one of a series taken by Elliot and Fry for Darwin's carte de visite of 1874, where he is wearing the same waistcoat and jacket.
