Barbara Askins (born 1939), US chemist. Askins worked as a chemist at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama, USA. From 1975 she worked on astronomical and geological pictures, and in 1978 patented her method of enhancing negatives using radioactive materials to produce an autoradiograph. In 1978, the Association for Advancement of Inventions and Innovations named her the National Inventor of the Year for her work. The process she invented was expanded to include X-ray technology (allowing smaller doses of X-rays to be used) and the restoration of old pictures. Photographed in 1978.
