A group of men and boys with leprosy in the Philippines, early 1900s. Leprosy, also known as Hansen's disease, is a chronic infection caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis. It results in damage to the nerves leading to disfiguring skin lesions and deformities. This group was photographed at San Lazaro Leper Hospital, Cebu Province, where many lepers were detained to be sent to the Culion Leper Colony established by the US Government in Palawan Province.
